The Narendra Modi-led government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that it gets fraudster Nirav Modi extradited to India. According to a report, it is now referring to a 14-year-old case to strengthen its approach in seeking the fugitive businessman's arrest in Hong Kong.

On March 23, the Ministry of External Affairs requested authorities in Hong Kong to arrest Modi in connection with the alleged PNB fraud, which is worth Rs 13,000 crore.

While India's request is still being examined, the government is assessing how it can get governments to respond to extradition requests of those people who flee the country after committing financial fraud. It is looking at the case of businessman Ashok Tahilram Sadarangani and could follow similar procedures to get Modi back to India, a report in The Economic Times said.

Sadarangani, who was accused of defrauding Bank of Maharashtra and Union Bank of India to the tune of Rs 8.5 crore, had fled India in 2001. In November 2003, he was traced in Hong Kong by the CBI. The then government had approached Hong Kong to have him extradited.

Acting on the request, authorities in Hong Kong arrested Sadarangani on December 1, 2003. In March 2004, a local court ordered his extradition and on June 6, 2004, he was deported to India.

Looking at the prompt action taken by authorities of the Chinese special administrative region at the time, the Indian government is hopeful that Modi would be deported soon, the publication cited sources as saying.
